Authentic Thai flavours at the heart of this little restaurant


One of the things we love about working within the food space is that you can be surprised by excellent culinary skills anywhere. By that I mean not all great chef’s reside in top of the range fancy restaurants, sometimes you will find them in smaller out of the way eateries where their loyal customers are the ones that provide the fanfare for their efforts.

When we heard from locals that Rak Thai Kitchen was a must try we quickly made a booking to check it out for ourselves.

Rak Thai Kitchen is run by two very talented young women Cecile and Nui. Cecile the chef grew up in the Philippines in a busy household where she got to hone her cooking skills at a very young age helping her mother and father prepare the daily meals for the family of 15. Nui is the business manager and gracious host who runs the front of house at the restaurant while completing her studies at university. They really are a dynamic, hardworking team.

So what about the food?

One of our top pics from the menu was the Chilli Duck stir fry ($20.50). Cecile explained how they marinate and slow roast the duck in house before combining it in a stir fry with seasonal vegetables, chilli paste and traditional Thai flavours. Superb! Also the beef Massaman curry ($16) and coconut rice was hard to beat. One of the best we have tried in Toowoomba.

Other dishes that impressed were the crispy fish w house made tamarind sauce ($18). We paired this with pineapple fried rice ($14) a first for me. This is fried rice with fresh chopped pineapple, sultana’s, egg and fresh vegetables. I found it really tasty and refreshing, perfect with the crispy fish pieces.

According to Nui the Cashew nut chicken ($16) is one of the most popular dishes on the menu and after tasting it we can see why. Another of our favourites was the crispy king prawns ($20.90) and the Pad Thai ($14) a traditional dish perfectly executed and full of flavour.

A stand out for us in all of the dishes we tried was the freshness and supreme quality of the vegetables. It made sense when Nui and Cecile explained that they source all of their vegetables right next door at Westridge Fruit & Vegetables

Rak Thai Kitchen is at the Westridge Shopping Centre in West St Toowoomba. The restaurant is BYO and open for lunch Tuesday to Sunday and dinner 7 nights. Try their banquet menu from just $33 per person for 3 courses.

Don’t expect a fancy 5 star venue, DO expect authentic Thai food cooked with love – this place is just fabulous!
