Mark and Lisa Bentley have owned Jilly’s café for a little over 2 years. During that time they have fine-tuned the menu, done a touch of renovating and branded the place with their own personal style.
From the moment you walk in you feel the positive vibe and I have to say you just can’t help but notice how clean this place is. (Yes clean and food service have to go hand in hand in book) Décor is a fresh white Hampton’s theme with comfy booths that make you want to stay that little bit longer and chat over a cup of coffee or drool over the cake cabinet. The cakes are nothing short of amazing! Today’s offering included a rich caramel pie and a chocolate layer cake packed with smooth chocolate ganache. Yum!
Jilly’s is open 7 days from 8am and they have a regular breakfast and lunch time crowd that keep coming back to sample the creative and delicious menu served up by long term chef Rebecca Locker. (Thanks for letting us in your kitchen Bec)
Dinner is also available 7 days and the mood and specials change to suit evening diners who often choose a nice drop of Australian wine to have with their meal. Yes they are licensed – tick!
So what did we try? Three dishes; starting with Arancini ($15.90) w chorizo, mushroom & sundried tomato. These were served on a bed of housemade napoli sauce w shaved parmesan. MMM, the perfect balance of crunchy coating and creamy filling, these were flavour packed and delicious!
Next we decided to sample one of Jilly’s most popular lunchtime specials, the open grilled chicken B.L.A.T ($17.90) on Turkish with halloumi, fresh salad and creamy parsley yoghurt dressing. This was served with a generous basket of crisp sweet potato fries.
Lastly Pecan Chicken ($24.90) delicately crumbed chicken breast served on a bed of coconut rice w tomato and avocado salad. This dish was so simple and yet perfect in taste and flavour. If I could pick one thing I would say that we couldn’t taste a lot of coconut in the rice but we settled for a squeeze of fresh lemon which added just enough zing.
Our verdict: Jilly’s – a beautiful little café/restaurant in the heart of the Toowoomba CBD that is punching way above its weight in the food and service stakes. It scored the highest points for us on cleanliness, service and food quality. An exceptional café experience, well done Mark and Lisa!
