About Preston Peak Wines

Welcome to Preston Peak Wines, a family owned boutique wine business based in Toowoomba, South-East Queensland. Established in 1994 by Kym Thumpkin and Ashley Smith, Preston Peak Wines is committed to producing high quality wines and providing a first class experience to visitors at the Cellar Door.

The winery has grown in size and reputation, now producing 3500 cases of wine annually and receiving over 20,000 visitors to the Cellar Door each year. The winery was awarded a four and a half star rating in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2010, with the 2006 Reserve Shiraz receiving five stars and 94 points. The 2008 Reserve Shiraz has since been awarded in the Top 5 Australian & New Zealand Shiraz in Winestate Magazine’s Wine of the Year Awards (November 2010). We are thrilled to announce that the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Carménère has been awarded five stars and a gold medal in the Winestate Cabernet & Blends Tasting (July/Aug 2012).

As a boutique Australian winery, the company prides itself on producing a consistent range of award winning wine products, earning more than 250 awards and recommendations throughout the entire range of wines since beginning operations.

Preston Peak Wines produces a range of bottled red, white, sparkling and fortified wines, appealing to a broad spectrum of the wine market in three product ranges: the Reserve – premium wines with cellaring potential, the Leaf Series – fruit driven wines suitable for drinking now, and the recently expanded Wildflower range which offers a reasonably priced range of easy drinking table wines including Merlot, Shiraz, Blanc and a picnic-style red. All three ranges are now being made by several specialist wine makers, including Mark Ravenscroft, Peter Scudamore-Smith, Mike Hayes and Peter Stark.

The company has two vineyards – Devil’s Elbow Vineyard, the site of the winery in Wyberba near Stanthorpe and the Preston Vineyard near Toowoomba, the site of the Cellar Door, with the former vineyard producing the majority of the grape crush.

Toowoomba dentists Ashley Smith and Kym Thumpkin established Preston Peak Wines in 1994, from Wyberba in the Granite Belt. In 1999, the Preston Peak Wines Cellar Door opened in Preston and since then has developed a reputation with locals and visitors for its quality wine product, wine tasting, events and its stunning location and views.

The views from the cellar door over the Singing Lake are spectacular and there is plenty of space for children to run around. They can also say hello to the winery’s miniature horses and to our Hereford cattle, if they are in the mooed – not a typo – attempted humour. Our Singing Lake Café, with its stunning lake view, is open for lunch from Friday to Monday with a variety of delicious freshly –made lunches, desserts, cakes and coffees. Don’t miss the Duck Pie, the Lamburger and the Mud Cake. For a menu go to Café The Swigmore Hall- the winery’s concert hall – is home to a series of monthly concerts every year. Importantly, for winter (and sometimes summer), the Swigmore Hall has heating as well as seating. Concerts for 2015 will include choral music, jazz, chamber music, a piano recital, an orchestral concert, opera and a brass band day. For details of the concert programme go to Concerts. Our Wines We produce fine Verdelho, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Our wine is made at our winery from grapes grown in our cool climate vineyards at an elevation of about 950 metres. We are particularly known for our Verdelho and Chardonnay. Verdelho Our first 3 vintages of Verdelho won the Trophy for Queensland’s Best White Wine. Since then they have regularly won regular gold medals. Our Verdelho has been served at a formal banquet for the Queen, at banquets in State and Federal parliament and our 2009 Verdelho was selected as the Queensland Parliament's 150th Anniversary White Wine. We are just about to release our Verdelho 2014 Also new this year has been a luscious dessert style Late Harvest Verdelho 2014. Chardonnay We are one of the few small wineries in Australia to have won a national trophy at a national show for a champion wine. This is effectively a 'Best in Australia' award. We did it for the first time with our Reserve Chardonnay 2002 which won the Trophy for the Best Chardonnay in the Royal Queensland Show 2004 and then again with our Sparkling Chardonnay 2008 which won the Trophy for the Champion Sparkling Wine in the Australian Small Winemakers Show in 2010. Reds We have produced gold medal and trophy winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot and we have recently added Pinot Noir to the red varieties that we planted initially. Opening Hours For the Cellar Door are Saturdays and Sundays 10.00 to 5.00 and Monday, Tuesday & Friday 11.00 to 4.00. The Cellar Door is closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays so that Robert and Peggy can drink wine instead of selling it. The Singing Lake Café is also open from Friday to Monday from 11.00

    WINERY & CELLAR DOOR

    : Licensed, Cellar Door

THE WINERY Our winemaking style is traditional, using indigenous yeasts, and minimal interference. Apart from traditional styles, we also make non-traditional, non-commercial wine styles. These are enjoyed by many people, especially those who enjoy something special. THE GARDENS Our gardens are very much a work in progress. It has been more than challenging to attempt to establish gardens during a drought which has lasted 3 years. We commenced by retrieving old farm equipment from the far reaches of our farm. Most of this equipment comprised horse drawn ploughs, wagons, carts, and sulkies. These items had simply been abandoned down through the years as they were superseded by new technology such as tractors, trucks and cars. Many of these items are now located in our gardens. An excellent example of a sulky in original condition with fancy hand painted decorations takes pride of place inside our cellar door. OPENING HOURS We are open for wine tastings and sales: – 9:00am to 5:00pm daily We enjoy spending time with our visitors. This can be a little challenging when we have 50 people in our cellar door. This usually happens when 2 or more tour groups arrive simultaneously. Please telephone us beforehand wherever possible , if you are part of a group of 10 or more. We will do our best to arrange a mutually convenient time for your visit, so as to make your visit as enjoyable as possible. We look forward to welcoming you to Aventine Wines.

Welcome to Golden Grove Estate Golden Grove Estate Vineyard and Winery, is situated in the highlands of the Ballandean Valley, in the heart of Queenslands premier wine district, the Granite Belt. The high altitude of 820 metres and cool summer climate make the area ideal for the growing of classic wine grape varieties and production of fine wines. The first vines were planted in 1975 and were followed in recent years by other classic varieties. The vineyards are planted in a northerly aspect in a combination type soil of decomposed granite with trap rock loam and are drip irrigated from the Accommodation Creek. These attributes contribute to the slow ripening and full development of soft delicate flavors. Golden Grove Estate consists of 40 acres of classic wine grapes including Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet, Semillon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Black and White Muscat Alternative varieties include, Barbera, Tempranillo, Mouvedre, Malbec, Durif, Vermentino and Nero d’Avola.
